Who needs beats when you’ve got phenomena?

Quartz is the hot business news startup that’s pitting itself against the big financial publications WSJ et al with a crack staff of hacks who are tasked with reinventing digital business news from the ground up. One of their first stated ‘innovations’ is to reject specialisms ie the beats like health, science, environment, etc etc, in favour of phenomena ie shifting issues of the day like climate change, right to die, and so on. A manifesto from one of their key signings, Gideon Lichfield, formerly of the Economist.com, sets out their modus operandi in preliminary terms. More to come I’m sure. We may be hearing a lot more about Quartz.
