FT’s one-man army to run mobile production

“We only have one journalist responsible for mobile and tablet production”

The Financial Times’s head of product for mobile and ’emerging platforms’, Stephen Pinches, speaking to the WAN-IFRA Tablet and App Summit in Frankfurt last month, where he spoke on the importance for publishers of knowing their customers.

Pinches explains why the FT decided to go native web app rather than Apple, saying that beyond not wanting to hand Apple a 30pc cut of subscription revenue, they wanted their subscribers’ data (which Apple does not provide if you are registered with Newsstand). This underlines once again how data is as valuable as every little bit of anonymous subscription revenue.
